"Sire?"
Sessin's interruption made the Ninja Muse escape from my Dragonator Lock, disappearing in a black shroud.
"It's still a no!" I yelled at the empty space. "I won't do a Muppet show for the challenge!" I folded my wings and turned to my chef dwarf. "Have you finished cleaning the Grand Library?"
"Yes." He held a couple books in his hands. One had my grandfather's name on it, the other had mine. "Sire, I was wondering...Why did you pick 'Al' for your public name? You said because of your granddad but no one called him 'Al'. His name was Alfonso but his pet name was 'Poncho' and the short for your name -which is that of a conqueror- is actually 'Alex'. You should have kept the conqueror's name."
He hesitated under my gaze, maybe thinking he should have not asked that.
"Alex and Poncho are different dragons but his essence lives in me. Al is where our names converge. Al is for Alfonso, for Alex and for Alpha. It is also for 'Aliento', the Spanish word for 'breath' but that also serves as metaphor for 'life', for 'strength' and for 'encouragement'. All the things you need to conquer adversity. Al is where everything amalgamates and where Father Dragon's powers come from. Al Diaz is my union with my grandfather in an eternal present, where he still teaches me of the greatness of our bloodline. Al is twice a conqueror's name."
Sessin held the books closer and nodded. "I'll return the books back to their place and help with the preparations for the challenge."
"Call the squad. The first preparation I want to make is a thank you note for Arlee Bird, for creating and organizing the Blogging from A to Z Challenge."
A very witty and imaginative entry, Al...I like it!
ReplyDeleteHave fun A to Z'ing :)
I missed your posts, Father Dragon!! SO glad to be back. Love knowing where the name comes from. It's great to "see" you again! :)
ReplyDeleteI always wondered what "Al" stood for. :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you back.
"Aliento, the Spanish word for breath"
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to learn something new. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing the origins of the name Al Diaz... I had wondered about it...
ReplyDeleteA great tribute to Arlee, founder of this amazing challenge! That's an amazing picture!
Hi Al, what a wonderful post. For me A is for Al Diaz, Alex Cavanaugh and Arlee Bird :)
ReplyDeleteWell played. Great way to kick off the challenge.

Very clever, Al! And it would be odd with two Alexes.
ReplyDeleteBe sure to stop by today!
Great post Al! I second the thanks to Arlee, the Challenge is such a wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteCheers to Lee! I love all that you shared and it is always fascinating to know how people pick their blogging names :D
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you Al :D
I think this is going to be a great challenge!
And so the mystery unfolds... There is power in one's true name. And dragons have a *lot* of power. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWaiting to see what you and your squad comes up with. Kudos to Arlee.
ReplyDeleteAl is a great name! There are a couple of words for breath in French, one of which is 'haleine' but it's pronounced 'aleine' (the 'h' is silent) and it reminds me of 'aliento'. Great start to AZ Father Dragon.(:
ReplyDeleteThis challenge is THE coolest thing to hit the blogosphere :) Al was my great-grandfather's name. He died a hero in World-war II so I'd say it has some significance :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tribute! Can't wait to see what's up next!
ReplyDeleteHMG
Arlee deserves a huge hurrah for starting this challenge and I'm anxious to see what it looks like here when your dwarves have finished their work :)
ReplyDeleteWow, so cool! Looking forward to a month of A to Z with Al!
ReplyDeleteOh, Al! This is such a wonderful way to start the Challenge! Looking forward to reading all of your posts! Never knew that much about the name Al before - very interesting:)
ReplyDeleteFinally! I've appreciated your comments at Life is Good but have not been able to navigate to your blog until today when Alex posted your link! Hi!
ReplyDeleteLove this. I really enjoy knowing how people choose their pen names, and it must be awesome to have dwarfs at your beck and call!

ReplyDeleteHey that's right! A for Al. Bing bing bing!
ReplyDeleteInteresting to know about the lack of accuracy in the Mayan rendition from Apocolypto. I'd love to know what they were. If you have time, and feel like it, email me--would love to discuss cuz I was actually wondering that myself while watching. pakazo77@gmail.com
Happy A-Z!
What an awesome thank you card for Arlee!
ReplyDeleteAnd I loved your entry, Al! It's great to learn how you came up with "Al."

I love that thank you for Arlee! :) And excellent start to the Challenge. I do love hearing where names originate from.
ReplyDeleteWhat an intriguing way to create your public name! I like what AL stands for. It shows you respect your family's heritage without taking away who you are! Well dine!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the supportive comment you left at my blog, Al. It really does a writer good th know that his peers respect and appreciate his work!

Muppets... arf!
ReplyDeletePoor Sessin. I love your explanation for the name convergence and Aliento seems natural for a dragon who controls his breath without setting everything on fire - even muppets. :)

waiting for more, Al!
ReplyDeleteI love the dancing, cheering dwarves with the dragon head. Excellent. And it was fun to learn where 'Al' comes from.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to learn the origin story of your name!
ReplyDeleteFirst time I have been here. Alex linked to your blog (as you certainly know by now). I love how you told the story of your name and honored Arlee all at the same time. Impressive.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting. Good luck with the rest of A-Z!
ReplyDeleteA powerful name, Al. I think it's wonderful.

It was fun learning the origin of your name. Great tribute to Arlee, and I enjoyed Alex's tribute to you.

Nice one! And Arlee and Alex are very kind gentlemen. I might add that they are starstruck fans of mine and we have lots of good natured banter on my alternatives to the A to Z Challenge. Your name and it's origin is most fascinating, my friend. Al Diaz, I salute you.
ReplyDeleteWishing you much fun and fulfilment in the challenge. And before my comments starts to dragon, I shall now leave :)
In kindness,
Gary :)
Love it! I may have to lurk around some, even though I'm on hiatus. :D
ReplyDeleteAll is a very good name . . . Also short for Albert . . The name of my father, my grandfather, and two -grandfathers.
ReplyDelete"Al is twice a conqueror's name."

Hi Al, I'm here visiting from the A-Z but also for the blog blitz!! :) Hope you have a great "B" day!
ReplyDeleteOh I think this is going to be a very enjoyable trip around blogs that participate. Might an elderly witch with gammy legs beg the odd lift, messire? Ailsa Abraham (posted by Cam, who can do this!)
